Speculating about events in past, present and future

Part 1: Speculating About the Past

  • Let's talk about some important historical events (the sinking of the Titanic, the first moon landing, etc.)

Activity:

Remember to use modals for past speculation:

    • What could have happened differently?
    • What might the people involved have felt at that moment?
    • What must they have been thinking during the event?

Examples:

  • The Titanic might not have sunk if it had seen the iceberg earlier.
  • They must have been terrified when they realized the ship was sinking.

  • Part 2: Speculating About the Present

    • Lets's talk about any news that have happened recently.

    Activity:

      • What might be happening in this picture?
      • Why could the people be acting this way?

    Examples:

    • They might be waiting for someone.
    • They could be lost, that's why they look confused.

Part 3: Speculating About the Future

    • let's talk about events in the future and how we can make predictions or speculate about what might happen.

    Activity:

    • Choose one future event (like a new technology, environmental changes, a sporting event, etc.). Speculate about different possible outcomes using modals for future speculation.

      • What might happen in the next 10 years?
      • What could be the consequences of this event?

    Examples:

    • In the future, technology could completely replace teachers.
    • There might be more extreme weather if climate change continues.
